Why we keep sign-in passwordless

There is no password to set, forget, or reset in Backstage. You sign in with your email and a one-time code sent straight to your inbox, every time.

It is a small decision that shapes a surprising amount of the product, and here is why we built it this way instead of the password form almost everything else uses.

Passwords are a support problem in disguise

A meaningful share of support requests on most platforms are password resets, and coaches are busy enough without adding "remember another password" to their list. Removing passwords removes that entire category of friction, for coaches and their clients alike.

A code is inherently short-lived

A password sits valid indefinitely once it is set, whereas a sign-in code expires within minutes. If a code leaks somewhere it should not, the exposure window is naturally small, which is a meaningfully different security posture without any extra effort from you.

It is the same flow for a new coach and a returning one

There is no separate sign-up form. The first time you sign in, verifying your code simply asks for your name and creates your account. Every return visit after that uses the exact same email and code flow, with nothing extra to remember.
